Spoilers ahead: for the puzzle and the movies/games
This post assumes you've already solved the puzzle. It reveals all categories and their connections, and discusses plot details, endings, and spoilers for featured movies/games throughout.
In Force Majeure, one avalanche lasts seconds and one bad decision poisons the rest of a family holiday. Nobody needs to be buried. The marriage takes the direct hit.
Movies: Encanto · The Incredibles · ParaNorman · The Addams Family
The Madrigals have magical gifts, the Parrs have superpowers, Norman can speak with the dead, and the Addams clan treats the macabre as good manners. Every family has its own rules. These families merely need more insurance.
Encanto makes the house part of the household, complete with opinions and moving floorboards. ParaNorman goes smaller and stranger: a boy's inherited ability pulls a centuries-old curse into a Massachusetts town. In both, supernatural trouble exposes a family argument that was already waiting.
Movies: Force Majeure · The Loneliest Planet · Antichrist · The One I Love
The locations sound restorative: an Alpine resort, a Caucasus trek, a woodland cabin, a private couples retreat. Then the relationship arrives. Distance from ordinary life removes the polite exits and leaves each pair with one another.
The Loneliest Planet hinges on a tiny reflex during a hiking encounter. The One I Love turns therapy into a science-fiction problem at a secluded estate. Antichrist looks at the phrase "woodland retreat" and calls its lawyer.
Movies: The Courier · Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy · The Spy Who Came in from the Cold · The Good Shepherd
Greville Wynne was a British salesman, not a trained spy, when he began carrying intelligence from Soviet officer Oleg Penkovsky. The Courier understands the grim comedy of putting nuclear secrets in the hands of a man whose cover is business travel.
The other films move deeper into the institutions. Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy hunts a mole inside British intelligence. The Spy Who Came in from the Cold turns a supposed defection into a layered operation. The Good Shepherd follows the habits and damage that form around the early CIA.
This group works because the secrets are almost secondary. The real shared material is suspicion. Every friendship may be an assignment, and every quiet room has somebody listening badly.
Movies: Earth · Water · Con Air · Fire
EARTH. WATER. CON AIR. FIRE. Four old elements hiding as whole words, with no requirement that the films agree on anything else.
The odd extra wrinkle is that Water and Fire are both Deepa Mehta films. They form the first two released parts of her Elements trilogy, with Earth arriving between them in 1998. The Earth on this board is the 2007 nature documentary, because the row needed one more trapdoor.
Con Air puts Nicolas Cage on a prison transport full of hijackers. Once AIR sits beside the other three words, the action-movie noise clears and the elementary-school diagram appears. Stop reading plots and read the nouns.
The getaway row is proof that a nice view has never fixed a relationship. Today's PixelLinkr puzzle offers a healthier travel plan, provided your home is a starship, drillship, train, or airship.
