🟢 Easy: A child is separated from family
Movies: Home Alone · The Jungle Book · An American Tail · Dumbo
Kevin's family flies to Paris without him in Home Alone. The oversight is enormous, but it does free an eight-year-old to redesign suburban security around paint cans and micro machines.
Fievel is swept away during his family's voyage to America. Dumbo loses his mother when the circus locks her up. Mowgli must leave the wolves who raised him. Each separation enlarges the world immediately, usually before the child has packed anything useful.
🟡 Medium: Neighbors suspect a killer nearby
Movies: Disturbia · Summer of 84 · The Good Neighbor · Watcher
Disturbia gives Shia LaBeouf house arrest, binoculars, and a neighbor played by David Morse. There was never going to be a calm homeowners-association meeting after that setup.
The boys in Summer of 84 suspect a police officer. Watcher puts Maika Monroe across from a lit apartment window in Bucharest. The Good Neighbor complicates the pattern by making teenage surveillance itself dangerous. Looking is easy. Knowing what you saw is the problem.
🔵 Hard: Amateur filmmaking changes young lives
Movies: Super 8 · The Fabelmans · Son of Rambow · Be Kind Rewind
The kids in Super 8 happen to capture a train crash while shooting a zombie film. The production value improves. Everything else gets considerably worse.
Sammy Fabelman discovers that a camera can expose family truths nobody says aloud. Son of Rambow turns filmmaking into friendship and rebellion. Be Kind Rewind lets homemade remakes pull a neighborhood into the process. These films treat the camera as a social device before it becomes an artistic one.
🟣 Tricky: Titles open with chess pieces
Movies: King Ralph · Queen Margot · The Bishop's Wife · Knight and Day
KING. QUEEN. BISHOP. KNIGHT. Ignore the article before The Bishop's Wife and the first meaningful word in each title walks straight off a chessboard.
The films themselves refuse to cooperate beyond that. One is a John Goodman monarchy comedy, one is a blood-soaked French historical drama, one gives Cary Grant angel duties, and one throws Tom Cruise onto moving vehicles. That tonal collision is the pleasure. The pieces match. Nothing else does.
The homemade movies carried the day. A cardboard prop can reveal a family secret just as efficiently as expensive equipment.
