CineLinkr #162: The Story Behind the Puzzle

Spoilers ahead: for the puzzle and the movies/games

This post assumes you've already solved the puzzle. It reveals all categories and their connections, and discusses plot details, endings, and spoilers for featured movies/games throughout.

Tangerine was shot on three iPhone 5s handsets with anamorphic adapters. The phone did not make the movie intimate by magic. Sean Baker and cinematographer Radium Cheung still had to chase Los Angeles sunlight through streets that did not care about their battery percentage.

🟢 Easy: Plant-centered eco-horror

Movies: The Happening · Little Joe · In the Earth · The Ruins

The Happening gives plants a neurotoxin and Mark Wahlberg a deeply stressed relationship with basic botany. Little Joe works smaller: an engineered flower spreads pollen that may be changing the people who smell it.

The Ruins turns vines into predators that mimic sound. In the Earth goes underground, tying its terror to a mycorrhizal network in a pandemic-era forest. Photosynthesis has had enough of us.

🟡 Medium: A human-presenting body transforms into a creature

Movies: Cat People · Bite · Contracted · Spring

Cat People sends Nastassja Kinski from human form to black panther. Bite chooses an insect mutation, while Contracted tracks an infection toward a zombie body with very little interest in tasteful restraint.

Spring makes the reveal romantic and strange. Louise looks human but carries an ancient biology that periodically changes her into several monstrous forms. The group is body horror, but each film asks whether the transformed person is still the person somebody loved.

🔵 Hard: Feature films shot primarily on iPhones

Movies: Tangerine · Unsane · 9 Rides · 28 Years Later

Unsane used iPhone 7 Plus cameras to make its psychiatric hospital feel close and warped. 9 Rides, set mostly inside an Uber on New Year's Eve, was billed as the first feature shot in 4K on an iPhone 6s.

Then 28 Years Later arrived with customized iPhone 15 Pro Max rigs and a studio-scale production. That jump is the pleasure of the group: the same device family travels from tiny independent crews to a major horror sequel without losing its odd, immediate look.

This connection is about production choices, not budget. A phone can be a necessity, a formal constraint, or the camera Danny Boyle wants after everybody assumes he has moved on to something larger.

🟣 Tricky: The first main title word starts with a silent consonant

Movies: Gnomeo & Juliet · Wrath of Man · Knock at the Cabin · Psycho Beach Party

Read the first words aloud: Gnomeo, Wrath, Knock, Psycho. The G, W, K, and P show up in print and vanish in speech. Four letters report for work, touch nothing, and still expect credit.

Psycho Beach Party came from Charles Busch's stage comedy, then kept its collision of surf movie, slasher, and identity farce for the screen. It is also the title most likely to make the silent-letter trick hide in plain sight.

If phones were the technical flex, the useless first letters were the petty joy. PixelLinkr goes the opposite direction and asks players to navigate games with no visuals at all.
