CineLinkr #189: The Story Behind the Puzzle

Spoilers ahead: for the puzzle and the movies/games

This post assumes you've already solved the puzzle. It reveals all categories and their connections, and discusses plot details, endings, and spoilers for featured movies/games throughout.

Operation Dumbo Drop is built around a real sentence somebody had to say with a straight face: the village needs an elephant, and the U.S. Army has agreed to deliver one through a war zone. Cinema used to hand Danny Glover a map and see what happened.

🟢 Easy: Robin Williams performances

Movies: One Hour Photo · Awakenings · Patch Adams · Insomnia

This row covers the distance between Patch Adams and One Hour Photo, which is less a range than a warning about Robin Williams's reach. He could fill a hospital ward with manic warmth, then play a photo technician whose politeness makes fluorescent lighting feel unsafe.

Awakenings gave him Dr. Malcolm Sayer, a fictionalized version of neurologist Oliver Sacks. Insomnia cast him against Al Pacino as a crime writer under suspicion. Christopher Nolan understood that Williams did not need to raise his voice to make a scene tighten around him.

🟡 Medium: Survival stories on remote islands

Movies: The Blue Lagoon · Six Days, Seven Nights · Lord of the Flies · Swiss Family Robinson

The island starts as a blank space. Swiss Family Robinson builds a home there. Six Days, Seven Nights treats it as an obstacle course for Harrison Ford and Anne Heche. The Blue Lagoon lets isolation swallow years.

Lord of the Flies removes the comforting adult plan altogether. The 1990 adaptation strands military cadets and watches order disappear. A remote island can offer coconuts, waterfalls, and a useful reminder that civilization is apparently held together with stationery.

🔵 Hard: Soldiers cross hostile territory for unconventional objectives

Movies: The Dirty Dozen · Where Eagles Dare · Kelly's Heroes · Operation Dumbo Drop

The Dirty Dozen sends convicted soldiers on an assassination mission. Where Eagles Dare puts Richard Burton and Clint Eastwood inside a Bavarian fortress. Kelly's Heroes sends another Eastwood unit after German gold without waiting for official permission.

Then comes the elephant. Operation Dumbo Drop drew loosely from a 1968 U.S. Army effort to transport an elephant to a South Vietnamese village. It is the row's comic outlier and also the item that clarifies the connection: these are military journeys with objectives stranger than holding a line.

The pleasure of the group is escalation. Kill officers, rescue an agent, steal bullion, deliver pachyderm. Mission briefings have rarely deteriorated so efficiently.

🟣 Tricky: Films built from Shakespeare plays

Movies: Scotland, Pa. · She's the Man · My Own Private Idaho · Much Ado About Nothing

Much Ado About Nothing announces Shakespeare immediately. Kenneth Branagh gives the language sunlight, Tuscany, and Emma Thompson refusing to waste a syllable. The other three hide the source under new clothes.

Scotland, Pa. moves Macbeth into a 1970s fast-food restaurant. She's the Man converts Twelfth Night into a boarding-school soccer comedy. My Own Private Idaho borrows from Henry IV and Henry V while following hustlers through Portland, Idaho, and Rome.

The aha arrives when the odd details line up: mistaken identity, an ambitious couple, a wayward prince, familiar dialogue. Shakespeare survives every relocation, including one that gives Macbeth a deep fryer.

Robin Williams supplies the widest tonal swing, but the disguised Shakespeare row is the one that keeps unfolding. Today's PixelLinkr puzzle also changes familiar forms, turning Windows pack-ins and body parts into unlikely neighbors.
