CineLinkr #196: The Story Behind the Puzzle

Spoilers ahead: for the puzzle and the movies/games

This post assumes you've already solved the puzzle. It reveals all categories and their connections, and discusses plot details, endings, and spoilers for featured movies/games throughout.

The Ipcress File turns brainwashing into a grim little kitchen appliance of a process: sound, flashing images, repetition. Michael Caine's Harry Palmer survives it mostly through stubbornness, which feels right for a spy who looks annoyed by his own assignment.

🟢 Easy: Hypnosis drives the plot

Movies: Shallow Hal · The Curse of the Jade Scorpion · Stir of Echoes · The Ipcress File

Shallow Hal uses hypnosis for a romantic-comedy premise, while Stir of Echoes sends Kevin Bacon home from a session with visions he absolutely did not request. Both treat the altered mind as a door. One opens onto Gwyneth Paltrow. The other opens onto a murder mystery.

The Curse of the Jade Scorpion adds jewel theft, and The Ipcress File makes conditioning part of an interrogation program. Same tool, wildly different insurance claims.

🟡 Medium: Undercover officers infiltrate criminal organizations

Movies: Deep Cover · The Raid 2 · Imperium · Miami Vice

Deep Cover gives Laurence Fishburne a drug network and an identity that starts sticking to him. The Raid 2 sends Rama into Jakarta's underworld, where maintaining cover somehow becomes the less painful part of the job.

Imperium moves the danger into a white-supremacist network. Miami Vice goes glossy and humid, with Colin Farrell and Jamie Foxx entering an international drug operation. None of these assignments includes a calm weekly check-in with HR.

🔵 Hard: People become prey in organized death games

Movies: Hard Target · Surviving the Game · Guns Akimbo · The Most Dangerous Game

The Most Dangerous Game laid out the human-hunt blueprint in 1932: remote island, wealthy hunter, shipwrecked prey. Hard Target and Surviving the Game drag that cruelty into modern action cinema, with John Woo making the former his first American feature.

Guns Akimbo swaps the private hunt for spectator entertainment. The geography changes, but the deal does not. Someone powerful has built a game, and someone else has discovered that declining the invitation was never an option.

🟣 Tricky: Crime stories unfold over Christmas

Movies: The Silent Partner · The Ice Harvest · Reindeer Games · The Ref

The click comes when the tinsel stops reading as background. The Silent Partner begins with a Christmas bank robbery in Toronto. The Ice Harvest spends Christmas Eve trying to turn stolen money into an exit plan.

Reindeer Games adds a casino robbery. The Ref hands Denis Leary a hostage situation and a family argument so vicious that the burglar becomes the room's most reasonable person. Holiday cheer remains available in theory.

The Christmas-crime row wins for worst seasonal planning. PixelLinkr #196 offers a healthier family activity: fighting your relatives as bosses.
