Spoilers ahead: for the puzzle and the movies/games
This post assumes you've already solved the puzzle. It reveals all categories and their connections, and discusses plot details, endings, and spoilers for featured movies/games throughout.
Sabrina asks Harrison Ford to handle a romantic rivalry instead of a national-security crisis. After two Jack Ryan films, that sounds like a holiday. Then you remember that explaining your feelings can be considerably harder than explaining a covert operation in Colombia.
Movies: Sabrina · Frantic · Patriot Games · Clear and Present Danger
Ford plays Jack Ryan in both Patriot Games and Clear and Present Danger. Those are the obvious footholds, with Phillip Noyce directing both. The other two films make the casting connection more satisfying than four variations on the same action hero.
In Roman Polanski's Frantic, a surgeon searches Paris for his missing wife. Sydney Pollack's 1995 Sabrina remakes the 1954 film and puts Ford into the Larrabee family's romantic mess. Same familiar face, very different reasons for looking exhausted.
Movies: American Pie · Licorice Pizza · Hard Candy · Sausage Party
Pie, pizza, candy, sausage. You can solve this row without knowing a single plot, which is fortunate because ordering this as a meal would be a cry for help.
The titles promise a much more consistent experience than the films deliver. Licorice Pizza follows Gary and Alana in the San Fernando Valley in 1973; Hard Candy is a psychological thriller directed by David Slade. Putting the latter next to two broad comedies is an excellent way to ruin someone's expectations before the opening credits.
Movies: Free Willy · Dolphin Tale · Big Miracle · Flipper
Dolphin Tale draws on Winter, the rescued dolphin who lost her tail and received a prosthetic. The rehabilitation is the story, rather than a pleasant animal subplot attached to something else.
Big Miracle turns to Operation Breakthrough, the 1988 effort to free gray whales trapped in Alaskan ice. Free Willy concerns a captive orca, while Flipper includes treating a dolphin poisoned by toxic waste.
That distinction matters to the answer. These aren't merely films with dolphins or whales on the poster. People have to intervene, whether that means freeing an animal, treating it, or getting a rescue organized before conditions worsen.
Movies: The Santa Clause · Arthur Christmas · Noelle · Ernest Saves Christmas
Christmas is the conspicuous link. Succession is the useful one. All four stories turn Santa's position into a job that needs a new occupant.
The Santa Clause makes Scott Calvin's appointment accidental and contractual. Arthur Christmas treats Santa as a hereditary title, then lets a family argument develop around the handover. Apparently even the North Pole has a succession-planning problem.
Noelle begins with Nick struggling to fill the role and then disappearing. Ernest Saves Christmas has an aging Santa trying to reach his chosen replacement, Joe Carruthers. The satisfying click is noticing the vacancy beneath the decorations.
Santa's recruitment process could use a calmer panel. For a change of workplace, today's PixelLinkr follows Bungie's back catalogue and some extremely aggressive landscaping.
