Legends of the Old West
[object Object] · [object Object] · [object Object] · [object Object]
All four are foundational westerns. Once Upon a Time in the West is Leone's elegiac survey of everything the genre had built over two decades. For a Few Dollars More made Clint Eastwood the defining western star of his generation. Unforgiven is Eastwood's own revisionist answer to the genre he helped shape. Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid brought New Hollywood sensibility to the format without abandoning its conventions.

Deaths played entirely for laughs
[object Object] · [object Object] · [object Object] · [object Object]
All four are dark comedies where death is not backdrop but engine. In Bruges traps two hitmen in a city they did not choose with a corpse between them and a guilt that cannot be outrun. Harold and Maude makes a death-obsessed teenager fall in love with a 79-year-old woman, and the film insists both things are funny and true simultaneously. The Death of Stalin wrings sustained farce from a political class tripping over a fresh body while jostling for power. The Lobster sends the lonely to a hotel where the alternative to finding a partner is becoming an animal, and treats this as a bureaucratic matter.

The dance is the whole argument
[object Object] · [object Object] · [object Object] · [object Object]
Each film builds toward or through a single dance sequence that does the emotional work the dialogue refuses to do. In The Young Girls of Rochefort, the opening parade of colour and footsteps announces a film about yearning and missed connections before anyone has spoken. Dirty Dancing closes with a lift that signals the end of innocence without a line of explanation. Suspiria (2018) opens with a woman dancing herself apart while the new student watches from a taxi outside, and the sequence tells you everything you need to know about what the school does. In Strictly Ballroom, the rooftop finale under fairy lights is the entire argument the film has been building since the first scene.

Loves that never found their ending
[object Object] · [object Object] · [object Object] · [object Object]
In each film, the love is real and the ending separates the couple permanently. Brief Encounter ends on the platform where Alec and Laura say goodbye for the last time, each returning to a life that has not changed and cannot. In the Mood for Love ends years later with Chow Mo-wan at Angkor Wat, whispering a secret into a hole in a stone wall with no one to hear it. Brokeback Mountain ends with Ennis holding Jack's shirt in a trailer with no one coming back. The Remains of the Day ends on a sea promenade where Stevens realises he has spent his life on duty and missed everything else.
